Teacher Flexible Immersion Option
Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY)
The program of study held at UNY is a flexible immersion
option designed to give student teachers, practicing teachers and
those interested in education issues the opportunity to study at
an Indonesian institution focusing on education as well as exposure
to Indonesian schools. The ACICIS Resident Director and UNY staff
work together to help students undertaking this option design a
plan of study that suits the student's particular interests and
needs. Students with advanced language skills would normally undertake
the UNY Teacher's Option following a semester at UGM.
Students may request
combinations of the following elements in their semester of study:
Observation and Practical Teaching
Regular Subjects can be chosen from the university curriculum and
undertaken with other UNY students. As with the UGM Study Indonesia
Program, the focus is on Indonesian Language aquisition and so students
must select courses in which all lectures, tutorials and assessments
are in Bahasa Indonesia. Immersion units offered at UNY which can
be chosen by ACICIS students are in the area of the arts such as
batik, gamelan, wood carving, sport, painting, photography etc...,
or in theoretical fields such as education, arts and society. Some
combination of these units is possible.
Indonesian Language Learning
Intensive language units on offer at the Indonesian Culture and
Language Centre at UGM can be combined with UNY Immersion units.
A field Study Topic on an Educational Issue
This model is similar to the Field Study Option at UMM Malang
where students conduct their own research, present a seminar paper and write
a report in Indonesian. The student is supervised by a lecturer from UNY and
must have an appropriate command of Indonesian. As with the UMM Field Study
Option in East Java, students write a report of between 8-12,000 words and present
their report and seminar in Indonesian for UNY staff and students, the Resident
Director and others. ACICIS filed study reports and seminars are assessed by
UNY academics.
