ACICIS Open Lecture Series

Dr Chris Manning of the Australian National University addressing the 1st ACICIS Open Lecture. On July 1st, 2009, ACICIS launched the ACICIS Open Lecture Series at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta.

ACICIS Open Lectures will be held approximately bimonthly on different themes, with the cooperation of host universities in Yogyakarta, such as Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Indonesian Islamic University (UII) and the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI). At each lecture, Indonesian and international researchers, artists, academics and other public figures will be invited to share their research findings, and to take questions from participants regarding their work. ACICIS hopes that the Open Lecture Series will encourage a dialogue between international and local researchers, and provide the opportunity for an open dialogue between academic researchers, NGO and civil society actors and the wider student community.

Around 80 participants attended the inaugural lecture, ‘Making it in Indonesia's Cities: Preliminary Findings of a Household Survey of Migration in Indonesia’, which was given by Dr Chris Manning, (Australian National University), with Professor Tadjuddin Nur Effendi, (Professor of Sociology, FISIPOL, UGM).

Mr Moh. Tonthowi, from the Yogyakarta women’s and children’s refuge centre, Rifka Annisa (http://www.rifka-annisa.or.id/), also offered an NGO’s perspective on migration and trafficking in Indonesia.

Upcoming lectures will include: Indonesian arts since Reformation; Media relations between Indonesia and Australia; and NGO/ academic research collaborations on Indonesian social movements. Details of upcoming lectures and speakers will be provided soon on this site.

See a flyer for lecture 2.

Lectures will be conducted in English or Bahasa Indonesia, and information from the lectures will be made available on this website. All lectures will be free, and open to Indonesian and overseas student groups, and the public.

ACICIS welcomes proposals for upcoming lectures from both international as well as Indonesian researchers. If you are interested in participating, please contact ACICIS Jogja at: acicis.jogja@gmail.com for more details.
