Metro TV
Work Hours
Metro is a 24 hour news station. Students will be placed on both day and graveyard shift - the latter covering the period between midnight and 9am. Over the course of the four week placement the two interns will be rotated - two weeks daytime, two weeks graveyard. The news teams are a great bunch of people who speak very fluent English and are always there with advice when needed.
Intern Duties
- Voicing news segments.
- Producing news stories from the wires and sourcing appropriate footage and images. Three world stories and two sport stories to be produced in way each evening.
- Going on location with reporters.
- Editing the news stories for entry into the teleprompter for newsreaders.
- Elocution and pronunciation advice for newsreaders.
- Research issues and write interview questions.
Specific requirements
Energy! Each shift at Metro is a busy one and students need to have the energy to keep up with the pace. This is definitely no place for slackers. Computers and desks are always available in the newsrooms so a laptop is not required.
Some broadcasting experience is preferred by Metro but it is not essential. In their own words, you have to be a ‘quick learner’ for the position.
Initiative. They will want you to pitch stories.
All metro staff wear uniforms—it is part of the work culture that the owner has developed there—alongside the rather salubrious offices etc that are designed to make people feel as though work is a home. Interns don’t wear the staff uniforms but are requested to wear black pants, a white collared shirt, and a black tie.
Location and getting there
The advice is simple: when at Metro, live near Metro. The station is not that far from central Jakarta but traffic can make it a 1-2 hour trip. Astia from Metro will assist you in finding a kos next to the station. The kampung next to Metro is quite a nice little bit of Indonesia - lots of opportunities to develop your language.
