Kabar magazine

JPP student Rhiannon Horrell using a motor bike taxi in Jakarta, called an ojek.Being a monthly magazine, the pace at Kabar tends to be fairly relaxed. It may indeed be too relaxed if you are a student who can only operate on close deadlines. Monthly content is formed around a loose set of related themes and interns are given great freedom in how they might link stories to these themes. A 2009 music and food edition, for example, saw students working on articles such as jazz music in Jakarta, surviving as a vegetarian in the city, and another on the origins of the mysterious Indonesian ailment of ‘masuk angin’. Be prepared for out-of-pocket expenses for covering stories such as transportation and entry fees for events.

Work Hours

Monday-Friday. Work hours are relaxed. Interns usually spend the morning (8.30-12.00) in the office and then go out to do interviews in the afternoons (or vice versa). Various event invitations (daytime or evening) will land on the desk of Kabar that students will be sent out to cover.

Intern Duties

  • Writing stories for the magazine, from pitching the idea to conducting interviews.
  • Opportunities exist to learn about planning and magazine layout.
  • Aside from the magazine, short pieces can be written for uploading to the Kabar website.
  • Photographers are welcome.

Specific requirements

A laptop is preferable. Kabar has a limited number of desktops and a small office. Students are welcome to work from home on various assignments.

Location and getting there

The Kabar office is located in Kemang in South Jakarta. Kemang is the trendy southern hub of Jakarta where you can find high end restaurants, bars and boutiques. Students can either choose to live in Kemang or commute from areas such as Benhil. The closest busway route to this area is that which runs down to Ragunan. Hopping off at the Buncit will then necessitate a short ojek ride across to Kemang. An ojek from Benhill will take 20-30 minutes but a taxi will take well over an hour in peak hour. Jl. Kemang Raya can become awfully jammed.
