30 participants selected

ACICIS is delighted to announce that we have been able to accept 30 applicants for the JPP short internship course in Jakarta starting in late December 2009.

All of the students have been informed via email  and they have now received an official acceptance letter.

The students are from the following universities/workplaces:

Deakin University 1
Edith Cowan University 1
Massey University 1
Monash University 4
PSB Academy, UON Singapore 1
Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology 4
Sydney Morning Herald 1
University of Canterbury 3
University of Queensland 1
University of Sydney 1
University of Tasmania 2
University of Technology Sydney 9
University of Wollongong 1

JPP students will join with 14 students who will be undertaking a new program called the Development Studies Professional Practicum (DSPP). This will make a total of 44 students from 18 universities who will be attending Atma Jaya Catholic University in Jakarta at the same time.

The selection process

In choosing applicants ACICIS will follow the following steps:

  1. Choose the best applicants using the general selection criteria as the basis for judgement.
  2. At this stage we anticipate being able to accept approximately 30 applicants and also make a reserve list of 3-4 applicants.

The General selection criteria are:

"If there are not sufficient places available for all applicants (and we expect this to be the case), ACICIS will choose participants on a number of criteria including: academic record, industry experience, life experience, the student's flexibility in choice of placement, the skills that the applicant can bring to the placement, and the general quality of the student's application."

The selection committee will be JPP Project Officer Ms Louise Williams and Prof David Hill.

The anticipated selection process timeline is:

1 September – Applications due.
15 September – All applications processed and sent to the selection panel.
1 October – Selection committee meets and decides participants and reserve list.
10 October – Selection committee will have met before this date. It is hoped that all successful applicants will be informed of their acceptance/non-acceptance into the program by this date.

Late applications will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances, and by arrangement with the ACICIS secretariat.

Media Internship Placements

ACICIS staff are currently working to confirm media internship placements. Check back here soon for a complete list of placements.

Indonesian Language Learning

For JPP 2010 Atma Jaya will identify students/organise tutor program for participants who want to continue with language-learning during their internship period because past participants have commented that they would like to be given this option.

Accommodation

For security reasons, for the January 2010 program ACICIS will not be congregating students in a hotel for the initial two weeks of the program, as was the case in previous years. ACICIS will place students into pre-booked residential accommodation (kos or boarding houses) that provide convenient access to both Atma Jaya University and their work placements. These residential neighbourhoods are far removed from the types of locations that DFAT bulletins advise foreigners to avoid. As neighbourhoods they are populated almost exclusively by local Indonesian families and workers. Most kos employ 24 hour security guards and access is limited to residents and their guests. ACICIS staff will personally survey all accommodation options and record contact details. See here for examples of kos in Jakarta.

AsiaNZ Foundation joins ACICIS

Through its media programme, the Asia New Zealand Foundation has obtained membership to ACICIS, the Australian Consortium for In-Country Indonesian Studies. By securing ACICIS membership, Asia:NZ will be better able to promote the programme to New Zealand universities and continue to provide JPP scholarships to journalism graduates. In 2008 , Asia:NZ’s media programme collaborated with ACICIS to include three young New Zealand journalists among the 25 participants of the highly successful JPP 2008. In 2009, five young New Zealand journalists were selected to take part in JPP 2009 in Jakarta in January-February 2009: They joined another 28 students from 12 universities, selected from 59 high-quality applications.
